Sun control films: Strong sun protection for windows
Sun control films are self-adhesive polyester films that are installed to window panes to protect against heat, sun glare and UV radiation. Sun control films are permanently on the glass pane after installation. Unlike curtains and blinds, they maintain a clear view to the outside without sacrificing natural daylight.
Improvement of living comfort and room climate
The coatings filter infrared radiation (responsible for heat development), UV radiation (main cause of fading) and daylight (reduction of sun glare). The window films prevent unwanted solar energy from entering the interior through the window pane.
In the shown graphic, the model E-Lite 70 rejects a pleasant 61% solar infrared radiation and prevents 99% aggressive UV radiation from penetrating the interior of the room. With 70% daylight, the interior of the room remains flooded with light, unpleasant glare from the sun is reduced by 30%. The result is a pleasantly cool interior with effective glare reduction against sun glare. The UV filter prevents from premature fading of the interior. The upgrade offers permanent solar and heat reduction for window panes. Existing window glazings will receive a major upgrade, which will make a lasting contribution to maintaining the value of your property. The upgrade is also inexpensive, as you don’t have to replace the entire window and buy a new one. A residue-free removal is still possible with all offered window coatings even after many years.
Upgrade of energy efficiency of window glazings
Sun control coatings can filter out over 80% of the solar radiation energy. The result are 5-8 °C cooler rooms measured after installation. Together with existing air conditioning systems, the desired temperature can be achieved with up to 34% shorter cooling times. The air conditioning runs less frequently and for less long. Electricity and maintenance costs for air conditioners can be reduced significantly. The energy efficiency of window glazing and buildings can be sustainably improved. The energy-efficient foils are absolutely trendy. Because they do not only reduce power consumption but also are easy on the wallet. They reduce the building’s CO² emissions and thus protect the environment.

Significant improvement in workplace conditions during heat
The Workplace Ordinance (ArbStVO) regulates minimum requirements for safety and health protection in the operation of workplaces and construction sites. Windows, glass walls and skylights must be protected against strong sunlight in order to avoid heat at the workplace, see ArbStVO §9 paragraph 2 and §6 paragraph 1 in connection with ASR A3.5 (technical rule for workplaces).
The required improvement in workplace conditions is achieved by reducing the solar heat load with the sun control coatings. The heat reduction foils also offer effective glare reduction against glare from the sun. This is a very pleasant relief, especially when working on screens, PCs, smartphones and televisions near a window. The integrated UV absorber within the flat glass coating protect colored structures of interior items such as furniture or carpets from being prematurely destroyed by fading. Due to their transparency, the window films let a lot of light into the building in which you are staying and spending a lot of time.
The high quality of the window films is guaranteed by their strong performance, the exclusive design and the high quality of the processed material. The high-performance coatings add value to all types of insulating and functional glazing with exceptionally good, energy-efficient properties. You create the best conditions for ideal workplace conditions.
Variants: Heat reduction from reflective to neutral
In addition to the sun protection value and light transmittance, the high-performance films differ in their color and light reflection.
💡 Tip: The best coating for your project is always a balance between sun control value and light transmission value. With practical filter functions in the online shop, you can find the product that best suits your needs in just a few steps.
Reflective sun control films
Reflective appearance and a strong visual statement. With maximum efficiency, pay for themselves in the shortest possible time. Combine effective heat rejection with long-term energy savings: All mirrored silver, bronze + gold models.
Dual reflective sun control films
Equipped with a mirror effect on the exterior side, but with little light reflection on the interior side. Protect against heat and preserve the ambience. Provide excellent heat reduction with a neutral inner appearance: All Titan models.
Neutral sun control films
Provide low internal + external light reflection effects. Pleasantly aesthetic, inconspicuous and efficient. Only minimal change in natural appearance. The aesthetic choice for residential, commercial and retail projects: All E-Lite + OptiLite models.
Spectral selektive sun control films
Provide maximum light transmission and minimum heat generation inside the room. No noticeable change in the glass optics. Ideally suited for energetic upgrading of buildings without changing the building appearance: All Cold-Steel models.
The described Standard sun control films do not provide any special additional functions. They impress with their strong solar control and the associated improvement in the energy efficiency of the coated window glazings. More comfort with more pleasant room temperatures as well as an exclusive external aesthetic are further advantages that speak for an sun control upgrade.
Functional sun control films bring additional advantages: With privacy protection and a spy mirror, they create more privacy. Mirrored on one side, with a clear view on the other. Combination films that combine sun control with shatter protection are a hit. They provide more safety in the event of glass damage.
The right place: Interior und exterior sun control films
There are solar control coatings for indoor and outdoor installation. In contrast to inner foils, outer foils already reject solar energy radiation on the outer side of the glazing, while the inner side remains cool. To answer the question whether an interior or an exterior foil is better used, the following aspects should be observed:
Exterior installation avoids thermal glass breakage
On modern thermal insulation glazing (2 panes with thermal insulation), triple glazing, winter gardens, skylights, sun control, soundproofing and safety glass, we recommend using sun control foils on the exterior side. The external installation prevents a thermal stress crack in the glass when exposed to strong sunlight. The heat reduction coatings are particularly resistant and withstand external weather conditions.
💡 Tip: Window manufacturers often mark their windows with a stamp placed on the silver glazing bead in the space between the panes. With labels such as “Thermo”, “Plus”, “K-Plus”, a printed snowflake or sun or the numbers 1.1, 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 an exterior film should be used.
Interior installation possible on single glazings
On older simple insulating glazing (2 panes without thermal insulation) and single-pane glazing, sun reduction coatings can be used on the interior side. With these types of glazing, there is generally no risk of thermal breakage of the glass pane. Which type of foil can be used on which type of glass, is described in the product description, just view the Additional data tab.
💡 Tip: Solar control foils should never be installed on a part on the glazing, but always over the entire surface. The partial installation can be the reason for thermal stress cracks in the glass.
Installation: Bubble-free installation of sun control foils
The window films are self-adhesive and can be retrofitted on glass surfaces with a plane surface. The bubble-free installation of the heat protection coatings is done using the so-called wet adhesive process:
- Cut the foil so that the edges of the film have an all around distance of 1-2 mm to the window edge (rubber).
- Then thoroughly clean the surface to be glued and spray it with release and lubricant agent (installation liquid).
- Then peel off the protective film on the back of the coating and also spray the adhesive side with installation liquid.
- Apply the wet film to the sprayed window pane and place it so that it is in the right and final position on the pane.
- Squeeze everything bubble free with a squeegee. Starting evenly from the center to the outside of the foil edge.
- Finally, the wet edges only need to be wiped dry and the installation of the window coating is done.
If you wish, we cut the film to individual millimeter size. Detailed installation instructions with lots of tips and tricks are part of every shipment free of charge. We you wish we assist you with our nationwide installation service. Just ask us!
Care Tips: How the solar coating lasts a long time
If you are wondering whether it is easy to clean, the answer is clearly yes: Cleaning is done with water, conventional glass cleaning products and a squeegee. Here are some care tips on how to make sun control films last a particularly long time:
- Areas coated with solar control coatings should always be cleaned wet. Small particles can cause scratches when cleaning with dry cloths.
- Aggressive cleaning agents that contain abrasive particles should not be used. A mild detergent or conventional glass cleaner is better.
- So cleaning is best done with plenty of water. A rubber squeegee and the use of commercially glass cleaning agents are suitable aids.
- The best cleaning results are achieved when wiping from the foil center to the edge. This is ideal to wash out excess water and dirt.
- In order to permanently maintain the clarity of exterior window films, we recommend carrying out the cleaning described 3-4 times a year.
- The sealing of exterior foil edges along the window frame with an approx. 5 mm silicone seam protects against weather influences.
All solar control films are of high quality and designed for a long service life, as is appropriate for a foil for flat glass films. The extreme durability of the products is guaranteed by best materials, careful workmanship and many years of experience. We vouch for these services with a guarantee of up to 10 years and more.
Summary: Sun control films are strong sun protection
With sun control films, windows are retrofitted with sun protection. We have summarized the most important advantages here:
Summary: Sun protection for windows and doors
- Less heat and more comfort: With a permanently clear view to the outside, high room temperatures are reduced. With air conditioning, the ideal room temperature is reached in shorter time.
- Reduction of energy costs: The air conditioning runs less often and less long. The costs for electricity and maintenance are saved. The environment is protected as well.
- Improved workplace conditions: The workplace ordinance with a cooling from 26°C at the workplace is fulfilled. Laptops, computers or smartphones can be used glare-free.
- Permanently more privacy: The exterior mirror effect creates an elegant privacy screen. A view from outside to inside is elegantly prevented with reflective models.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about sun control films
🌞 How does the sun control film work?
The sun control film is self-adhesive and is subsequently installed to window panes. When properly applied, the window film repels heat, glare and UV radiation. The sun reduction is created by the reflection of the metal coatings and the absorption of the sun’s rays. This pleasantly reduces the heat build-up in the building.
⌚ How long do sun control films last?
- Sun control coatings for interior installation have a durability of up to 15 years on vertical glazing. Films for exterior installation last 10 years or more, depending on the model and position of the window panes.
- When installed to sloped exterior glazing, the durability is reduced due to the higher environmental impact.
💶 How much does the sun control film cost me?
- A sun control film for interior installation costs between €12.50/m² and €47.70/m². For exterior installation between €21.90/m² and €52.60/m². The price difference depends on the type of film selected.
- The film is available as linear meter from the roll. We calculate the price exactly according to the running meters ordered. If required, we can cut it to exact size (width x height in millimeters).
✂️ How do I install a sun control film?
- Clean the window surface to be coated thoroughly and spray it with a little installation fluid.
- Peel off the protective film on the back and spray the adhesive side with assembly fluid.
- Position the sun control film on the window so that it is 1-2 mm away from the edge all the way around.
- Smooth everything out with a squeegee, starting from the middle and working towards the edge, until there are no bubbles left, wipe dry, and you’re done.
Tip: Any white discoloration of the adhesive will disappear within a few days as it dries.
🧰 Where do I install a sun control film – inside or outside?
- We recommend installing sun control films on the exterior side of modern thermally insulated glazing (2 panes with thermal insulation), triple glazing, roof windows, sun protection, soundproofing and safety glass. Installing the film on the exterior side prevents stress cracks in the glass when exposed to strong sunlight.
- Older, simple insulating glazing (2 panes without thermal insulation) and single-pane glazing can be coated with sun control films on the interior side. With these types of glazing, there is generally no risk of thermal overload of the glass pane.
❄️ How many degrees cooler do sun control films make?
Depending on the type of film and the insulation of the rest of the building, the value is between 5°C and 8°C. Dark and highly reflective sun control films increase this value.
The data sheet in the product description of our sun reduction coatings tates the energy shielding in %. The higher this value, the greater the shielding of solar energy and the reduction in the room temperature.
💡 How bright is it in the room with a sun control film?
- Sun control films differ in their light transmission depending on the film model. There are sun control films with low, medium and high light transmission. The less daylight that comes through, the higher the sun protection.
- When looking from the inside to the outside, the human eye perceives a transparent coloring of the window pane (depending on the model in silver gray, anthracite, bronze, light blue, neutral).
- With 20, 30, 50 or 70% light transmission, a permanent clear view to the outside is guaranteed in all cases.
🌳 How do houseplants react to sun control films?
Houseplants usually react enthusiastically when they are protected from burns by the sun control film, for example in conservatories. Even after the sun protection film has been installed, there is still enough UV light in daylight for your houseplants to grow undisturbed.
Conservatories are often equipped with laminated safety glass (VSG glass) in the roof area. This has a plastic film between the glass surfaces that does not allow any UV light, which is necessary for plant growth, to pass through. Since the VSG glass does not allow any UV light to pass through anyway, you can also install a sun control film without any problems.
🗑️ How do I remove the sun protection film?
- Try to remove the sun protection film from the glass surface at one corner.
- Peel the window film off the glass surface slowly and evenly in one continuous movement at a 180° angle. Heating it with a hot air dryer at the same time makes the removal process easier.
- After removing the film, residues of the adhesive layer may remain on the glass pane. These can be removed using a wet glass scraper.
- For scratch-sensitive plastic surfaces, we recommend removing it with an adhesive residue remover (paint thinner).
