Anti-shatter films: Protection against everyday dangers
In private and public, we want to feel safe in buildings and be able to move freely. We work every day to ensure that you get exactly the security film that makes your environment safer. Which security film is the right one is largely determined by the danger that can occur in everyday life:
Glass breakage in everyday pedestrian traffic
Bleeding cuts can easily occur if passers-by stumble into an unsecured glass door or a ball flies through a not coated window pane. Then the splinter-binding or impact-resistant effect of a splinter protection coating protects against the dangerous flying of glass splinters. The crystal-clear model 400 with resistance class 2B2 according to EN 12600: 2000 protects passers-by and children from bodily harm. Fields of application are glass panes in residential buildings, offices, kindergartens, schools, universities or hospitals.
Burglary, vandalism and terror attacks
In the event of willful destruction, robbery or terrorist attacks, glass splinters can be shot through the air. In city centers and commercial areas with a high concentration of glass facades or shop windows, the crystal-clear models 700 with resistance class 1B1 according to EN 12600: 2000 and 1200 with resistance class A1 according to DIN 52 290 or P2A according to DIN EN 356 protect against serious damage. In addition to the splinter-binding effect, these film models also have anti-impact and anti-explosion properties.
Explosions or pressure waves – effective splinter protection
For buildings in the vicinity of potentially explosive locations, e.g. construction areas or refineries, the transparent models 700 with resistance class 1B1 according to EN 12600: 2000, 1200 with resistance class A1 according to DIN 52 290 or P2A according to DIN EN 356 and 1500 according to P3A according to DIN EN 356 A provide increased protection against serious damage. In the event of a fire, the bursting of glass is delayed. These film models are not only splinter-binding, but also impact-resistant and explosion-resistant.
Anti-shatter films for force majeure, natural disasters
Strong storms, floods and earthquakes can cause severe damage if unsecured window panes burst. In regions threatened by force majeure or natural disasters, the clear-sighted models 1200 with safety level A1 or P2A according to DIN EN 356 and 1500 with resistance class P3A according to DIN EN 356 A help to save lives. In addition to the splinter-binding effect, these film models also have anti-impact and anti-explosion properties.
Function: Upgrading of glass security many times over
The tear-resistant coatings increase the resistance value of the coated window and glass surface many times over. After installation, they are permanently on the glass pane, and the glass security gets a sustainably upgrade.
Protection against splinters, thrown through and explosive effects
The certified splinter protection meets the highest quality standards and meets the requirements of current EU law. The high-performance coatings improve glass security and have the following effects, depending on the respective resistance class:
- Splinter binding: The safety films adhere strongly to the glass surface. The pane is held together if the glass breaks. The flight of glass splinters is avoided. The splinter-binding effect is common to all foil models with resistance class 1B1, 2B2, A1, P2A or P3A.
- Impact resistance In the event of force, the impact energy is absorbed by the protective glass coating. The striking and throwing of the pane is inhibited. The impact-resistance effect is achieved by all 1B1, A1 and P2A and P3A foils.
- Explosion resistance: With detonations and explosions, shattered glass is bound and held together. Injuries and property damage can be effectively avoided. The anti-explosion effect is fulfilled by all A1 and P2A or P3A foil models.
The Materials Testing Office of North Rhine-Westphalia has classified the fire behavior of the security films according to DIN EN 13501 with B-s1, d0 as flame retardant: The tested material was classified as B for its fire behavior, the additional classification with regard to smoke development fulfills s1, the additional classification for the burning droplets met d0.
Anti-shatter films with practical additional functions
When it comes to practical additional functions, the additional sun control function is not the only possible with anti-shatter films. Some models also ensure more privacy – this is ideal for combining splinter control with privacy and discretion. These foils have one thing in common: They vary in design and color and offer excellent opportunities to not only make glass and windows in buildings and rooms safer, but also to make them more attractive.
- Crystal clear: In the standard version, the high transparency and clarity of the foils are a typical trademark, which can be found in all foils of the 400, 700, 1200 and 1500 series.
- Mirrored: With the mirrored window films of the 400 and 1200 solar control models, the interior is protected from unpleasant heat, sun glare and UV radiation, as well as flying glass parts.
- Milk glass optics: Privacy and discretion at home or at work can be ideally combined with the milk glass white security films of the 500 and 1200 series in frosted glass optics.
- Light grey: If you also need inconspicuous heat control, the light gray anti-shatter coating 600 Cold Steel with heat control function and a clear view to the outside is the ideal solution.
Practical side effect: blocking of premature fading
All films have another practical advantage in common: they have an integrated UV absorber that prevents the colored structures of objects from being affected by premature fading. Anti-shatter foils are ideally suited for this UV absorption and splinter binding on windows, doors, partition wall systems and glass showcases.
Knowing where: The right place for your anti-shatter foil
The foils are self-adhesive and can be retrofitted on all smooth surfaces. Splinter binding coatings are applied to window panes on the room side. They are particularly suitable for plane glass surfaces in the bathroom, bedroom or study. Passage doors, patio doors or display doors can also be made safer with the self-adhesive security films. This also counts for installation on door inserts and shop windows. The high-performance coatings are completely inconspicuous in the crystal-clear version. They let in a lot of daylight.
💡 Tip: In the case of high risk glass panes, e.g. glass doors, shatterproof films can be coated to the exterior side as well as to the interior side of the glass pane. This provides additional protection.
Safety films that can be installed outside on roof glazings can also provide a remedy: In the event of glass breakage, they prevent water from entering the interior of the room in the event of hail damage. The safety films are weather-resistant and are particularly suitable for protecting against damage outdoors. Areas of application are glazed stairs, balconies, elevators, parapets, light boxes.
Installation: Correct installation of anti-shatter films
The self-adhesive coatings are installed in just a few steps. They are extremely scratch-resistant and can be easily cleaned with conventional glass cleaning agents. In the following you can read how the installation is done step by step and what you have to pay attention to.
Installation using the wet installation process
The self-adhesive safety films can be retrofitted on all plane window and glass panes – even on door inserts. It is installed using the so-called wet installation process: Clean the surface to be installed thoroughly and spray it with a little lubricant and release agent (installation fluid). Peel off the protective foil on the back of the flat glass coating, spray the adhesive side as well and position it to the window pane. Squeeze everything bubble-free with a squeegee from the center to the edges and wipe everything dry, done. Any white discoloration of the adhesive disappears within a few days after it has completely dried out.
💡 Tip: With thicker splinter binding coatings, it is often not possible to cut the foil to size on the glass pane. We therefore recommend cutting the foil to the exact window size before installation. If you wish we carry out the millimeter cutting for you.
Connection of safety foils to the window frame
The connection of splinter binding films to the window frame ensures high resistance: The safety foil is – depending on the type of window – either installed under the glazing bead or – if this is not possible – a special silicone sealing is done. For this purpose, the coating is installed to the window frame with a distance of 1-2 mm. After that a special silicone sealing around the foil edges connects the foil to the window frame. The scratch-resistant surface of the safety coating is cleaned with conventional glass cleaning agents.
If carried out professionally, the installation of splinter binding coatings is quick, clean and quiet. Detailed installation instructions for the safety film are included with every delivery free of charge. If you wish our installation service provides you with a professional installation on site.
Care-tips: How anti-shatter coatings last a long time
The quality of the self-adhesive protective glass films is our top priority (ISO 9001 quality assurance standard during manufacture). The splinter binding foils we sell have been tested by recognized institutes (GGF, MPA NRW, TÜV Bayern). The conformity of the relevant standards has been confirmed by the VdS (Association of Non-Life Insurers). We stand for this with a manufacturer’s guarantee of 10 years for interior coatings and up to 5 years for exterior films. You can read here how the foils last particularly long:
- Safety coatings should always be cleaned wet. Small particles can scratch the surface when cleaned with a dry cloth.
- Aggressive cleaning agents should not be used. A mild detergent or conventional glass cleaner is much better.
- Cleaning is best done with plenty of water. A rubber squeegee and a commercial glass cleaner are suitable aids.
- The best results are achieved when washing out excess water and dirt from the center to the coatings edges.
- In order to maintain the clarity of exterior films, we recommend doing the cleaning 3-4 times a year.
💡 Tip: The sealing of the foil edges of exterior coated foils extends its lifespan. The sealing is done along the window frame with an approx. 5 mm thick silicone seam. It protects against external weather influences.
